Shearwater is located on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands, about 80 miles north of Seattle, and just south of the Canadian border. Travelling to Orcas Island is part of the fun! Whether you come by ferry or plane, you will enjoy fantastic views of the hundreds of small islands set in the Salish Sea -- the body of water between Puget Sound to the South, the Straits of Juan de Fuca (leading to the Pacific) to the West, and the Straits of Georgia (in Canada) to the North. These waters and islands form a kayaker's playground!

Once on Orcas, turn left off the ferry ramp and follow the main road for 9 miles. Turn right at the sign for Eastsound (at Washington Federal Savings & Loan). Turn left at the next stop sign (North Beach Rd.) and look for our shop in the 2nd building on the right. (If you are joining one of our 3-hour Tours DO NOT come to our Adventure Store in Eastsound. These tours meet at several different locations on the island.) Directions to our tour locations.

You have several options for how to get to the island:

1. Car & Ferry: The San Juan Ferry Terminal is located in Anacortes, a two hour drive from Seattle. The ferry ride is approximately 1 1/2 hours of scenic island views. From Seattle take Interstate 5 North to Burlington, then State Route 20 West (exit 230) to Anacortes. Follow the signs to San Juan Ferry. Fares for car & driver (round trip!) are about $38 (more for vehicles over 20' long or 7.5' tall). Additional passengers or walk-on fares are about $12/person. Ferry lines can be long on weekends and during summer months. We recommend arriving at the ferry terminal at least 1 1/2 hours before your departure time from late May through early September.
